Using traditional methods, Rachel makes beads, findings and jewellery components, using glass, enamels, polymer clay, sterling silver and copper.
For the glass beads she uses a technique called lampworking where a glass rod is melted in a flame, wound round a steel mandrel and heated till it forms a bead. After decorating it is then annealed overnight in a kiln to make it strong, and when cool the bead release is cleaned out from inside the hole.
For the enamel decorations the work is done mainly on copper in a fairly hot kiln.
The polymer clay is manipulated much like clay, it is rolled or sculpted, cured in an oven, then finished by sanding and polishing.
The findings are made from either sterling silver or copper using traditional metalworking methods, and where necessary are hallmaked through the Birmingham Assay Office.
Everything is made in a small workshop based in Birmingham, UK
